University of Ottawa Ranking in Canada

Adjacent to the famous Rideau Canal is the University of Ottawa, fondly known to its students and professors as the U of O. The University of Ottawa is a bilingual research University situated in the capital city of Canada – Ottawa.

History

The U of O boasts of a long, rich chronicle. It was founded in 1848 by Joseph-Bruno Guigues, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of the Province.

Formerly known as the College of Bytown, it was originally located in Lower Town. But because of the cramped-up

space, the college relocated to its present-day location in Sandy Hill. Renamed the College of Ottawa in 1861, the institution was finally changed to its modern-day appellation, following the Royal Charter from London.

Because of its international prestige, gaining admission at the U of O can be quite a challenge. The minimum rate for admission is at least 70%, but the marker can increase according to the popularity of the program.

Academic Rankings

Throughout the decades, the once-simple college has transformed into one of Canada’s finest bilingual public research universities.

With a score of 48.40, U of O has grappled on the 227th spot of the World University Rankings, a survey conducted by THES-QS. It was an impressive 13-point jump from its 240th ranking in the year 2012.

On a national scale, the U of O is heralded as the 6th best institution in the province of Ontario, and the 11th best university in the entire country.

As for survey indices, it is rank 70 for Citations per Faculty, with an excellent score of 84.70. After all, the university is a member of the U15, a collective of the best research-intensive schools in Canada. To date, the school manages 40 research institutes, including the world famous University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the University of Ottawa Health Research Institute.

As for international faculty, U of O is among one of the best at rank 107, with a high score of 88.70.

With its ten faculties, the university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs. Its top-ranked program is

Philosophy, ranked 51-100 in the THES-QS world rankings. With an academic reputation score of 54.60, it has significantly improved, given its 2012 ranking of 101-150.

Just as illustrious as its Philosophy degree are its programs in Life Sciences and Medicine. For this field, U of O should be your top choice, as it is ranked 135th in the world.

Other programs included in THES-QS 101-150 bracket are Law and Legal Studies, Linguistics, Politics and Sociology. Chemistry, Communication and Media Studies, Environmental Studies and History and Archaeology, on the other hand, are cited in the 151-200 category.

As for Social Sciences and Management, the U of O is at rank 259. This prestigious placing can be attributed to U of O’s triple accreditation, as it is one of two Canadian universities to have been awarded with so.

Famous Alumni

Given its high quality of education, U of O has managed to meld some of Canada’s brightest minds, such as Canadian vice regal consorts Pauline Vanier, Gabrielle Leger, and Maurice Sauve; CEOs Daniel Lamarre (Cirque du Soleil) Calin Rovinescu (Air Canada) and Andre Ouellet (Canada Post); and Pultizer Prize awardee Carol Shields.
